Loss prevention tips for your home.

When a natural disaster strikes, the last thing you want to think about is going back to survey the damage and file a property claim. However, theses important steps will ensure that you are reimbursed for damages and will allow your family to regain a sense of security.

What to do when you have to file a property claim

Here are the eight major steps to take when filing a property claim:

  1. Report the loss as soon as possible. The loss can be reported by contacting your broker, through the MyPVi app or directly to the insurance provider. Click here for a list of insurance provider phone numbers.
  2. Protect property from further damage.
    – Cover the property if it is exposed to the elements.
    – Make temporary repairs, if reasonable and necessary.
    – Maintain a record of all expenses incurred.
  3. Take photos of damage (if possible).
  4. Prepare an inventory of damaged personal property.
  5. Retain damaged property until a claims adjuster approves its disposal (unless a danger to safety exists).
  6. Notify the police if the loss involves any criminal activity, such as theft or vandalism.
  7. Expect to be contacted by the claims adjuster within 48 hours. Please call Prairie Villa if you have not been contacted within that time frame, so that our Claims Liaison can follow up with the insurance provider.
  8. Be prepared to provide additional information as requested by the claims adjuster.
